Some of the items on this page may be marked "Requires Authorization". Why's this? Kiwi must verify the customer's medical history in order to ensure the medication is necessary and used according the direction of a licensed medical practitioner. If you have already demonstrated this, then you may be able to view this product. If not, please email us using the contact page. Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Brimonidine is used to treat intraocular pressure (high pressure in the eye) or open-angle glaucoma. It may be used on its own, as in the product Alphagan Eye Drops, or patients can buy brimonidine in combination with timolol, another product which lowers intraocular pressure, in products like Combigan.

The medication works by inhibiting production of aqueous humor, a fluid which inflates the globe of the eye, and facilitates its drainage through the uveoscleral outflow, a route in which the fluid passes through, around, and between tissues.

Less commonly patients buy brimonidine as a gel, usually under the brand name Mirvaso, for treating redness in conditions like rosacea. In this instance the medication narrows blood vessels, reducing redness of the face.

Brimonidine can be used in patients as young as 2 years old.

Using Brimonidine to treat Intraocular Pressure

This product is most commonly administered in eye drops directly to the eye. One drop in the affected eye(s) three times per day, as close to 8 hours apart as possible, is the standard treatment. Doctor instructions may vary.

Other medications are also often given to treat intraocular pressure, particularly if the condition is severe or has developed into open-angle glaucoma. If this is the case, wait at least 5 minutes before or after the administration of another medication, such as timolol. If wearing contacts, they should be removed prior to application of eye drops and kept out for at least 15 minutes.

Patients who are prescribed other medications and are planning to buy brimonidine may want to consider other options, such as Combigan, which contains timolol and brimonidine in a single, convenient package, though it is not quite as potent as brimonidine and timolol alone.

There are certain risk factors that increase the odds one will develop intraocular pressure, most notably if an individual:

  • Has a family history of ocular hypertension or glaucoma.
  • Is over age 40.
  • Is black or Latino.
  • Has diabetes.
  • Is very nearsighted.

Patients can mitigate risk with regular eye exams, especially as they get older. Catching the condition at its earliest stages offers patients the best odds at treating it and preventing permanent vision loss. Sometimes patients are able to minimize risks of intraocular pressure by addressing underlying issues, such as making the lifestyle changes necessary to manage diabetes. However, in most cases, there is little patients can do other than treat the condition and hope for the best.

Brimonidine to Alleviate Facial Redness

Used as a facial gel, brimonidine can alleviate redness of the face caused by conditions like rosacea. Using pea-sized amounts of the gel, gently rubbed into red areas of the face, redness is often alleviated or eliminated entirely. Redness will return once the medication wears off, and it should only be used once per day.

While brimonidine can help patients alleviate redness, it is not a cure and in some cases it may act as a trigger---worsening the condition shortly after administration. Patients may want to start with even less than a pea-sized amount, gradually increasing as time goes on provided no negative effects develop.
